Humphrey Atherton was admitted as a freeman at Dorchester on May 2, 1638. He began his Massachusetts military career as a member of the artillery company in 1638, was promoted to Lieutenant in 1645, to Captain in 1650, to Major 1652,and to Major General in 1661.

Robert de Atherton lived in the time of King John 1199–1216. From this we trace down through the centuries to Humphrey Atherton who was born Lancashire, England, about 1609, and came with his wife (Mary Wales) and their t young children, in the ship, James, from Bristol, England, in 1635, to Dorchester, in New England. … At about the time when Humphrey Atherton arrived with his young family in Dorchester, the larger part of the Dorchester Church, with its pastor, removed to Windsor, Connecticut, and Humphrey Atherton, with his brother-in-law, Nathaniel Wales, assisted Richard Mather, (Rev) (who came in the same ship with them) in nurturing the Dorchester Church back into thrifty life again. As the years went on, Humphrey Atherton became more and more a prominent in the town and the colony, …
In 1644 there were “wardens” appointed to take care of and manage the affairs of the first public school in Dorcheser. Blake in his Annals says that “they were to see that both the master and the scholar performed their duty, and to judge of, and end, any difference that might arise, between master and scholar, or their Parents, according to sundry rules and directions there set down.” Humphrey Atherton was one of the first wardens, who were chosen for life. Thus was inaugurated the public school, which had no precedent in America.
In 1645, £250 was raised to build a new meeting house, to replace the earlier one (which was a rude building, thatched with straw, with a stairway on the outside), and Humphrey Atherton was one of those chosen to attend to this matter.
He had decided taste for military affairs, organized the first training band in Dorchester in 1664, was early a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, was its captain 1650 to 1658, commanded the Suffolk regiment with title of major general, was chief military officer in New England, many years Selectman and Town Treasurer, deputy to General Courts 1638–1641, in 1659 was Speaker, and had great experience and skill in treatment of the Indians.
Capt. Johnson in his “Wonder-working Providence” speaks of Humphrey Atherton as a “lively courageous man,” and says:— “Altho he be slow of speech, yet he is down right for the business, one of cheerful spirit, and entire for the country.”
In 1645 the commissioners of the United Colonies appointed a council of war, placed Capt. Miles Standish at its head, with Humphrey Atherton as one of his colleagues. He is said to have been “a man of courage and presence of mind,” for when he was sent with 20 men to Pessacus, an Indian sachem [chief] to demand the arrears to the colony of 300 fathom of wampum, Pessacus put him off for some time with dilatory answers, not suffering him even to come into his presence. Atherton finally led his men to the door of the wigwam, entered himself with pistol in hand, leaving his men without, and, seizing Pessacus by the hair of his head, drew him forth from the midst of a great number of his attendants, threatening, if any of them interfered, that he would despatch them. Pessacus paid waht was demanded, and the English returned in safety.
Gen. Humphrey Atherton had a grant of 500 acres at Nonotucke, beyond Springfield, Mary 26, 1658 — given to him by the General Court in recognition of his public service, Nonotucke being the Indian name for the region about Hadley and Hatfield. This grant interfered with other grants previously made, and so, in Nov. 1659, the Court granted an additional 200 acres (700 in all) which were relocated at Waranoke, now Westfield. The estate of Gen. Humphrey Atherton after his death, included in the inventory a “Farme of seven hundred acres at Waronoco.”
The death of Major General Humphrey Atherton, by accident, in 1661, deprived the colony of one of its principal men.
“While returning home in the dark after reviewing his troops on Boston Common his horse was struck by a stray cow. In the collision he was thrown and killed. Sept. 16, 1661.”

“The first American ancestor of the Rhode Island branch of the Cole family was James Cole, whose wife was named Mary. His children were: James, born in England about 1626; Hugh, born in England about 1627; John and Mary. James Cole is mentioned in Plymouth, Massachusetts, as early as 1633, when he became a freeman there. Cole’s Hill, where “Plymouth Rock” stands, is said to have taken the name from him. He is supposed to have kept an inn there from 1638 to 1660 and was the first innkeeper in New England. In 1635 Samuel Cole opened the first house of entertainment in Boston. The

keeping of inns seems to have been a favorite occupation in the family, the old stage coach hostelry in Warren, Rhode Island, known as “Cole’s Hotel,” built in 1760, and destroyed by fire in 1894, being one of the oldest and best known hotels in Rhode Island.”

From New England Families, Genealogical and Memorial, Edited by William Richard Cutter, pgs 1540-1

Notes for HUGH COLE:
“Hugh Cole married (first) Mary Fox- well, daughter of Richard Foxwell, of Barn- stable, Massachusetts, who was a tailor by trade. Mr. Cole’s second wife was Elizabeth (Lettice) Cooke, who first married William Shurtliffe, the ancestor of the Rev. Flavel Shurtliffe, who was at one time a minister of Warren, Rhode Island. He was killed by lightning, and she subsequently married Jacob Cooke, and later Hugh Cole. For his third wife Mr. Cole married Mrs. Mary Morton, who was a widow Harlow when she married Mr. Morton; and Mary Harlow was an ancestor of Anna Cole (the mother of Abby A. and Asenath W. Cole), through James Wilbur, who was a son of Daniel Wilbur and Mary Barnaby, she a daughter of Ambrose Barnaby, who was a son of James and Joanna (Harlow) Barnaby. By his first marriage Hugh Cole had children as follows: James, born November 8, 1655; Hugh, March 15, 1658; John, May 15, 1660; Martha, April 16, 1662; Anna, October 14, 1664; Ruth, April 17, 1666; Joseph, May 15, 1668; Mary, in 1676; Eben- ezer, in 1677; and Benjamin, in 1678. This family lived in Swansea, on the banks of Cole’s river, at the site of the railroad station for many years known as Cole’s Station, and now as Touisset, Massachusetts. Hugh Cole was a very intimate friend of King Philip, and on the eve of the breaking out of his war King Philip sent him word by. an Indian scout, telling him of his danger, and that it would be^impossible to protect him after the Indian warriors were on the warpath. He left there, taking a boat with his household goods, and went down the river. He had not gone far before he looked back and saw his house burning. He seems to have left this farm to his sons Hugh and James, and he later settled on the Kickemuit river. Hugh Cole was deputy from Swansea to the General Court at Plymouth Colony in 16/3-74-75 and 1680 and 1683-84-85-86-87.”

WALTER MELLISH.

1st Lt. Walter Eaton Mellish, 3rd NH Vol.

Mellish enlisted like other soldiers, and was made part and parcel of
Co. I, Capt. Carlton. His rank at muster-in of the company was Private.
From this grade he was promoted thus: to Corporal in July, 180;] (on Folly
Island) ; to Sergeant 20 Aug. 18(U. As a corporal he re-enlisted, and had
the regulation furlough.

When the regiment went to Fort Fisher in January 1865, Mellish was
left in Virginia. “He received 2d Lieutenant’s commission about 25 Jan.
He rejoined with the others (from Virginia) 17 Feb., near Fort Fisher, and
went with regiment through to Wilmington. He was mustered as 2d Lieu-
tenant, 25 April, as of 1 March, 1865”), cice J. Ackerman, promoted, the com-
mission being dated 25 Jan. It is quite apparent, as Ackeruian was mustered
into his new grade 24 Feb. that the interval of two months was an injustice
to Mellish; but historians have no power to right this class of wrongs. He
was assigned to Co. F, and the muster was for the unexpired term of the
regiment. Very soon again he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, cice John S.
James, promoted, being mustered 19 May, as of 26 April, and for the unex-
pired term of the regiment. The commission bore date 6 April. He was
assigned to Co. H and so continued to the end. Mellish, on receiving his
2d Lieutenant’s commission (in Virginia), was presented by his comrades
there with a sword and straps. He was at Bluffton, Daufuskie, Pocotaligo,
Jehossee, Edisto, James Island (but not in the fight of I6 June, being sick
in camp). Went to Florida with the lumber expedition, in January. 1863.
Was never wounded. Was for some time one of the color-guard.

He was born in Boston,Mass., 16 June 1841. His address, in 1890,
was Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass.

Eldredge, Daniel. “The Third New Hampshire and All About It”. E.B. Stilling and Co. (1893) pg. 551

Notes for ELIZABETH “LIZZIE” ELLA BALL:
Mechanicsville was a village in the town of Mt. Holly, Rutland, VT in 1870.
It is now called Belmont. “. Once known as Mechanicsville for the large
number of mills and manufacturing concerns there, the most central village
is now known as Belmont. ”

Note Henry W. Ball of Mechanicsville

One of the early business industries of this place was the tannery which was
started by Deacon Dan PECK, more than sixty years ago, on the site now
occupied by Dr. T. A. COOTEY’s house. Daniel TUBBS, of Clarendon,
subsequently carried it on for some time and was succeeded by STONE & DERBY,
who ran it for a long time. Leander DERBY, in company with Alanson WHITE and
later with Henry W. BALL, operated it until it was abandoned some years
since.”

In the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, Elizabeth is clearly listed as being born in
VT, not New Hampshire. She is living with her parents in 1860 in
Londonderry, Windham, VT and the family has moved to Mechanicsville by 1870.

Matthias Farnsworth, the progenitor of the numerous families in Groton bearing this name came to Groton from Lynn, MA. (note: b. 1615, Lancashire, England)

He was an original proprietor of the town and owned a twenty-acre right. His farm was situated on both sides of the road leading to Harvard, a little south of James’ brook, more than a mile from the village. He was living at Lynn in the year 1657 and at Groton in 1664 though he may have been a resident of each place earlier
than these respective dates. He died in the latter part of the year 1689
aged 77 years.

The following is a copyof his will, on file in the Middlesex Probate Office at East Cambridge, Mass. “Groton Jenewarey 15th 1688/9 and in the 4 yere of the Rain of King Jams the

His wife’s name was Mary and they had ten children. The list of them given below is compiled from different sources. It is probable that his “daughter Robison” was the wife of James Robertson or Robinson and in that case, her name was Elizabeth and probably was born in England. James Robertson an original proprietor of the town married his wife Jan 16, 1667 and she died Dec. 22, 1729
aged 82 years. I am not sure about the order of the births of his children
but I suggest the following: Elizabeth (?) who prob. married James Robertson; Joseph born Nov. 17, 1657 at Lynn, MA and died Feb. 20, 1686/7; Mary born Oct 11 1660 at Lynn and married April 11, 1676 Samuel Thatcher of Watertown,
MA; Matthias, born at Groton; John who married Dec. 8, 1686 Hannah dau of John and Sarah (Eliot) Aldis of Dedham, and had nine children; Benjamin who married Mary, daughter of Jonas and Mary (Loker) Prescott and had ten children; Samuel who married Dec 12, 1706 the widow Mary (Whitcomb) Willard and had three children; Abigail born January 17, 1671 and prob. married John Hutchins
of Groton; Sarah (?) who perhaps married Simon Stone; and Jonathan born June 1 1675 married Ruth (Shattuck) and had fourteen children.

John one of the above sons named, was an influential man in all town affairs. He was an ensign in the militia, a selectman, a representative to the General Court from 1708 to 1714 inclusive excepting 1711, and a deacon in the church. In the autumn of 1711 he was in command of one of the eighteen garrisons in the town.
The name of Matthias Farnsworth of Groton MA appears in a list of prisoners in the hands of the French and Indians in Canada March 5, 1710/11, though there is nothing in the record to show when he was captured. He was probably the
son of Matthias Jr. and if so, he was a young man about 20 yrs old at the date of the list.

General William Eaton, Portrait by Rembrandt Peale

Notes for GEN. WILIAM EATON:
EATON, WILLIAM (1764—1811), American soldier, was born in Woodstock, Connecticut, on the 23rd of February 1764. As a boy he served for a short time in the Continental army. He was a school teacher for several years, graduated at Dartmouth College in 1790, was clerk of the lower house of the Vermont legislature in 1791—1792, and in 1792 re-entered the army as a captain, later serving against the Indians in Ohio and Georgia. In 1797 he was appointed consul to Tunis, where he arrived in February 1799. In March 1799, with the consuls to Tripoli and Algiers, he negotiated alterations in the treaty of 1797 with Tunis. He rendered great service to Danish merchantmen by buying on credit several Danish prizes in. Tunis and turning them over to their original owners for the redemption of his notes. In 1803 he quarrelled with the Bey, was ordered’ from the country, and returned to the United States to urge American intervention for the restoration of Ahmet Karamanli to the throne of Tripoli, arguing that this would impress the Barbary States with the power of the United States. In 1804 he returned to the Mediterranean as United States naval agent to the Barbary States with Barron’s fleet. On the 23rd of February 1805 he agreed with Ahmet that the United States should undertake to re-establish him in Tripoli, that the expenses of the expedition should be repaid to the United States by Ahmet, an.d that Eaton should be general and commander-in-chief of the land forces in Ahmet’s campaign; as the secretary of the navy had given the entire matter into the hands of Commodore Barron, and as Barron and Tobias Lear (1762—1816), the United States consulgeneral at Algiers and a diplomatic agent to conduct negotiations, had been instructed to consider the advisability of making arrangements with the existing government in Tripoli, Eaton far exceeded his authority. On the 8th of March he started for Derna across the Libyan desert from the Arab’s Tower, 40 m. W. of Alexandria, with a force of about 5oo men., including a few Americans, about 40 Greeks and some Arab cavalry. In the march of nearly fioo m. the camel-drivers and the Arab chiefs repeatedly mutinied, and Ahmet Pasha once put himself at the head of the Arabs and ordered them to attack Eaton. Ahmet more than once wished to give up the expedition. There were practically no provisions for the latter part of the march. On. the 27th of April with the assistance of three bombarding cruisers Eaton captured Derna—an exploit commemorated by Whittier’s poem Derne. On the I3th of May and on the ioth of June he successfully withstood the attacks of Tripolitan forces sent to dislodge him. On the 12th of June he abandoned the town upon orders from Commodore Rodgers, for Lear had made peace (4th June) with Yussuf, the de facto Pasha of Tripoli. Eaton returned to the United States, and received a grant of 10,000 acres in Maine from the Massachusetts legislature. According to a deposition which he made in January 1807 he was approached by Aaron Burr (q.v.), who attempted to enlist him in his “conspiracy,” and wished him to win over the marine corps and to sound Preble and Decatur. As he received from the government, soon after making this deposition, about $10,000 to liquidate claims for his expense in Tripoli, which he had long pressed in vain, his good faith has been doubted. At Burr’s trial at Richmond in 1807 Eaton was one of the witnesses, but his testimony was unimportant. In May 1807 he was elected a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and served for one term. He died on the 1st of June 1811 in Brimfield, Massachusetts.

WALTER MELLISH.
