“The first American ancestor of the Rhode Island branch of the Cole family was James Cole, whose wife was named Mary. His children were: James, born in England about 1626; Hugh, born in England about 1627; John and Mary. James Cole is mentioned in Plymouth, Massachusetts, as early as 1633, when he became a freeman there. Cole’s Hill, where “Plymouth Rock” stands, is said to have taken the name from him. He is supposed to have kept an inn there from 1638 to 1660 and was the first innkeeper in New England. In 1635 Samuel Cole opened the first house of entertainment in Boston. The

keeping of inns seems to have been a favorite occupation in the family, the old stage coach hostelry in Warren, Rhode Island, known as “Cole’s Hotel,” built in 1760, and destroyed by fire in 1894, being one of the oldest and best known hotels in Rhode Island.”

“Hugh Cole married (first) Mary Fox- well, daughter of Richard Foxwell, of Barn- stable, Massachusetts, who was a tailor by trade. Mr. Cole’s second wife was Elizabeth (Lettice) Cooke, who first married William Shurtliffe, the ancestor of the Rev. Flavel Shurtliffe, who was at one time a minister of Warren, Rhode Island. He was killed by lightning, and she subsequently married Jacob Cooke, and later Hugh Cole. For his third wife Mr. Cole married Mrs. Mary Morton, who was a widow Harlow when she married Mr. Morton; and Mary Harlow was an ancestor of Anna Cole (the mother of Abby A. and Asenath W. Cole), through James Wilbur, who was a son of Daniel Wilbur and Mary Barnaby, she a daughter of Ambrose Barnaby, who was a son of James and Joanna (Harlow) Barnaby. By his first marriage Hugh Cole had children as follows: James, born November 8, 1655; Hugh, March 15, 1658; John, May 15, 1660; Martha, April 16, 1662; Anna, October 14, 1664; Ruth, April 17, 1666; Joseph, May 15, 1668; Mary, in 1676; Eben- ezer, in 1677; and Benjamin, in 1678. This family lived in Swansea, on the banks of Cole’s river, at the site of the railroad station for many years known as Cole’s Station, and now as Touisset, Massachusetts. Hugh Cole was a very intimate friend of King Philip, and on the eve of the breaking out of his war King Philip sent him word by. an Indian scout, telling him of his danger, and that it would be^impossible to protect him after the Indian warriors were on the warpath. He left there, taking a boat with his household goods, and went down the river. He had not gone far before he looked back and saw his house burning. He seems to have left this farm to his sons Hugh and James, and he later settled on the Kickemuit river. Hugh Cole was deputy from Swansea to the General Court at Plymouth Colony in 16/3-74-75 and 1680 and 1683-84-85-86-87.”

He was a person of medium size and vigorous temperment. he inclined to liberality in theology, and was well famed for fidelity and strict honesty.”

WALTER MELLISH.

1st Lt. Walter Eaton Mellish, 3rd NH Vol.

Mellish enlisted like other soldiers, and was made part and parcel of
Co. I, Capt. Carlton. His rank at muster-in of the company was Private.
From this grade he was promoted thus: to Corporal in July, 180;] (on Folly
Island) ; to Sergeant 20 Aug. 18(U. As a corporal he re-enlisted, and had
the regulation furlough.

When the regiment went to Fort Fisher in January 1865, Mellish was
left in Virginia. “He received 2d Lieutenant’s commission about 25 Jan.
He rejoined with the others (from Virginia) 17 Feb., near Fort Fisher, and
went with regiment through to Wilmington. He was mustered as 2d Lieu-
tenant, 25 April, as of 1 March, 1865”), cice J. Ackerman, promoted, the com-
mission being dated 25 Jan. It is quite apparent, as Ackeruian was mustered
into his new grade 24 Feb. that the interval of two months was an injustice
to Mellish; but historians have no power to right this class of wrongs. He
was assigned to Co. F, and the muster was for the unexpired term of the
regiment. Very soon again he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant, cice John S.
James, promoted, being mustered 19 May, as of 26 April, and for the unex-
pired term of the regiment. The commission bore date 6 April. He was
assigned to Co. H and so continued to the end. Mellish, on receiving his
2d Lieutenant’s commission (in Virginia), was presented by his comrades
there with a sword and straps. He was at Bluffton, Daufuskie, Pocotaligo,
Jehossee, Edisto, James Island (but not in the fight of I6 June, being sick
in camp). Went to Florida with the lumber expedition, in January. 1863.
Was never wounded. Was for some time one of the color-guard.

He was born in Boston,Mass., 16 June 1841. His address, in 1890,
was Harvard Square, Cambridge, Mass.

Notes for ELIZABETH “LIZZIE” ELLA BALL:
Mechanicsville was a village in the town of Mt. Holly, Rutland, VT in 1870.
It is now called Belmont. “. Once known as Mechanicsville for the large
number of mills and manufacturing concerns there, the most central village
is now known as Belmont. ”

One of the early business industries of this place was the tannery which was
started by Deacon Dan PECK, more than sixty years ago, on the site now
occupied by Dr. T. A. COOTEY’s house. Daniel TUBBS, of Clarendon,
subsequently carried it on for some time and was succeeded by STONE & DERBY,
who ran it for a long time. Leander DERBY, in company with Alanson WHITE and
later with Henry W. BALL, operated it until it was abandoned some years
since.”

In the 1900 and 1910 Censuses, Elizabeth is clearly listed as being born in
VT, not New Hampshire. She is living with her parents in 1860 in
Londonderry, Windham, VT and the family has moved to Mechanicsville by 1870.
